Russians after the peak of the pandemic have become less likely to pay by card in supermarkets
In the third quarter, Russians began to pay less with bank cards in supermarkets compared to the previous quarter, which was the last peak in the spread of coronavirus. This is evidenced by the data of the research carried out by the specialists of the SberIndex portal together with the IT-company “Platform OFD”. The research results are available from RBC.
As established by experts, in the largest consumer segments (convenience stores, hypermarkets and supermarkets), the reduction in the share of non-cash spending relative to the “pandemic” quarter was 1.7; 2.2 and 3.1 p.p. respectively.
Cashless payments in the category “Clothes” fell by 4.3 percentage points, but this is primarily due to the return of offline retail, the study notes.
The opposite trend is observed in catering. Here the share of non-cash payments became even higher than in the second quarter: in restaurants it increased by 6.6 percentage points, in the fast food segment – by 6.4 percentage points.
The study also showed that in seven regions more than 60% of purchases were paid by card, which is a record in the entire history of observations.
The first place was taken by the Republic of Karelia, where 62.7% of purchases were made using the card. This is followed by the Murmansk region and the Komi Republic (62.5% and 62.0%, respectively). In general, all regions from the top 10 have already come close to the threshold value and, according to our expectations, will exceed it already in the first quarter of 2021, the study says.
In the spring, the Central Bank recommended that banks draw the attention of customers “to the priority use of the non-cash form of payment for goods and services.” In addition, before issuing money to customers or loading it into ATMs, banks were advised to withstand banknotes for a period guaranteeing the death of the coronavirus. Rospotrebnadzor warned that money can be a transmission channel for viruses and advised that after using it, wash your hands and not touch your face.
In September, the regulator reported that in the II quarter the share of non-cash payments by cards increased to 70%.
