Russia has the lowest healthy life expectancy in Europe
She was 63.7 years old. In Iceland, which is in first place, the figure is 71.9 years. Scientists named alcohol, tobacco, unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity as the main negative factors.
The lowest indicator of healthy life expectancy in Europe was recorded in Russia. This is evidenced by the results of the large-scale study “The Global Burden of Disease”, published in the medical journal The Lancet.
We are talking about a special indicator DALY (Disability-adjusted life year), which gives an idea of the years of life that can be lost due to loss of health or disability. The increase in DALYs indicates an increase in the number of chronic diseases in the country. In Russia, this figure has been falling over the past ten years by 2% per year.
Despite this, the expected healthy life expectancy in Russia in 2019 was 63.7 years – the lowest figure among European countries. The highest rate in Iceland is 71.9 years.
The Russian scientists who took part in the study associate a low healthy life expectancy in the country with a high risk of non-communicable diseases caused by tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, poor physical activity and poor diet.
Commenting on this data, Deputy Minister of Health of Russia Oleg Salagay told the portal “The Future of Russia. National Projects ”that the Lancet study demonstrates the need for measures to reduce tobacco and alcohol use in the population.
At the same time, Vasily Vlasov, a professor at the Higher School of Economics, who participated in the Global Burden of Disease study, said that the current anti-alcohol and anti-tobacco measures have the opposite effect, since the prices for these products in recent years have grown less than the size of salaries and pensions. Thus, alcohol and tobacco became more and more accessible to the population every year.
In 2018, The Lancet reported that Russia has the largest difference in life expectancy between men and women in the world – almost 11 years. By 2016, life expectancy for men in the country had risen to 65.4 years, while for women this figure reached 76.2 years.
Smoking, alcohol and drugs in 2016 were associated with 59.2% of deaths in Russia among men aged 15–49 years. These factors influenced female mortality only in 46.8% of cases.
