European Council President convenes emergency EU summit on coronavirus
President of the European Council Charles Michel announced the convening of an emergency summit of the heads of state and government of the European Union in the format of a videoconference on October 29. The topic of the meeting will be the coronavirus.
“I invite the leaders to an informal video conference on October 29, 2020 on COVID-19. We need to strengthen our collective efforts to fight the coronavirus, ”wrote Mr Michel on Twitter.
New restrictions are being introduced in European countries due to the spread of COVID-19. In Belgium, where the European Commission, the EU Council and the European Parliament are located, a curfew has been imposed, cafes and restaurants have been closed. Two EU summits have already been held in October. Among other topics, they also discussed the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the WHO, there are 8.4 million people infected with coronavirus out of 40.7 million in the world in Europe. If in March and April there were less than 50 thousand infections per day, then in October – up to 170 thousand.
