A monument to Timofey Sladkov, who fought during the Civil War in Russia, was unveiled in a village in the Orenburg region on Chapaev Street. In 1919, he led a white detachment, which in battle defeated the headquarters of Chapaev’s division
In the village of Krasnoye, Orenburg Region, a few days ago, a monument was unveiled to the Cossack Colonel Timofey Sladkov, who went down in history as “the winner of Vasily Chapaev” during the Civil War. The Ural Cossacks initiated the installation of the monument, the Orenburg Cossack military society reports.
The monument was erected in the chapel of the Ascension Church on Chapaev Street. The organization noted that the history of the Civil War in Russia “is still being rethought, the names of its undeservedly forgotten participants are being recalled and rehabilitated.” Colonel of the Ural Cossack army Timofey Sladkov, who led the detachment, through whose efforts the division of Vasily Chapaev was destroyed, is “one of the notable figures in this story,” the report says.
“The Ural Cossacks did this without us. The monument was erected on the territory of the church, not even on the municipal lands, so we had nothing to do with it and have nothing to do with it, ”Sergei Shchetinin, head of the Pervomaisky municipal district of the Orenburg region, told RBC. RBC turned to the Orenburg Cossack military society for a comment.
The head of the Krasnovsky village council, Gennady Kuleshov, in an interview with the Podyem newspaper, noted that the residents were not outraged by the appearance of the monument to Sladkov. According to him, the village has gone through “many times of trouble”, and now “everything is returning to normal.” As for the name of the street in honor of Chapaev, the authorities would have raised the issue of renaming if it had had a different name before. “But what is, it is. There were no other names, so we are not going to change anything, ”Kuleshov explained.
Timofey Sladkov is a Cossack, a participant in the First World War. During the Civil War, he was the commander of the 6th privileged Ural Cossack regiment, and later the Lbischensky cavalry regiment, which was part of the Ural army, which fought on the side of the whites in the Uralsk region.
