Ankara announced its readiness to send troops to help Azerbaijan
If there is a request from Azerbaijan for military assistance, Turkey will not hesitate, said Vice President Fuat Oktay
Turkey “without hesitation” will send soldiers and provide military support to Azerbaijan if such a request comes from Baku, Vice President Fuat Oktay said on Wednesday, Reuters reported.
Oktay explained that so far no such request has been received from the Azerbaijani government.
The statement was made in an interview with CNN Turk. The Vice President also criticized the activities of the OSCE Minsk Group, created to resolve the conflict and led by France, Russia and the United States.
According to him, the group is trying to leave the Karabakh issue unresolved and supports Armenia both politically and militarily.
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh at this stage does not have a diplomatic solution. According to Pashinyan, Yerevan tried to resolve the issue on the basis of a mutual compromise, lowering the bar for its demands, but did not receive a reciprocal step from the opposite side.
“With what we agree, Azerbaijan no longer agrees. This shows that it is already pointless to talk about a diplomatic solution at least at this stage, ”he said.
In his opinion, the Armenian people should take up arms and fight in order to reach an acceptable solution to the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. “We must take up arms and fight, devote ourselves to protecting the rights of the Motherland, and if this process is effectively organized, we will eventually be able to reach an acceptable diplomatic solution,” Pashinyan said.
In Baku they replied that they are ready to continue negotiations to resolve the conflict. Aide to the President of Azerbaijan Hikmet Hajiyev said that Yerevan does not seek to resolve the conflict. “With this statement, the Armenian leadership recognizes that the goal of Armenia is to preserve the occupation of Azerbaijani territories. This once again confirms that the statements of official Yerevan on the settlement of the conflict through negotiations are nothing but hypocrisy, ”Hajiyev said.
He also assured that Baku “supports the settlement of the conflict through negotiations in accordance with the existing” road map “based on the UN Security Council resolutions.
Armenia has repeatedly assessed the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh as Turkish-Azerbaijani aggression and accused Turkey of intervening in the conflict. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh is impossible without the participation of Turkey. “If Turkey was the co-chair of the [OSCE Minsk Group], then this issue would have been settled long ago,” he suggested.
