Prices for the main New Year’s product soared in Russia
Wholesale and retail prices for the main New Year’s product – red caviar – have soared by almost a third due to the meager catch of salmon in Kamchatka, said Polina Kirova, head of the Rybset analytical agency. It is quoted by RIA Novosti on Saturday, October 24.
“This year, fishermen are faced with a very low catch, and for some reason it was not predicted, although in the past ten years the forecasts have been quite accurate,” she said.
So, in the Far East only about 180 thousand tons of Pacific salmon out of the planned 240 were harvested. The catch of pink salmon was also significantly lower than expected, the agency writes.
Kirov noted that even frozen caviar (yastyk) rose by 70 percent. However, according to experts, a shortage of products is not expected.
Meanwhile, experts associate the rise in prices not only with the low catch, but also with the struggle with the so-called gray segment of the market. For about ten years, some firms have worked with enterprises using a special fiscal regime – the unified agricultural tax.
“This supply channel operated without VAT, so caviar was 18 percent cheaper. (…) Last year the Federal Tax Service of Russia began a great deal of “whitewashing”. The share of products with VAT has increased, and it is, naturally, more expensive, ”explained the agency’s interlocutor, who works in the All-Russian Association of Fisheries Enterprises, Entrepreneurs and Exporters (VARPE).
In addition, due to the weak ruble, exports have become more profitable for producers, the material says.
In August, it was reported that the production of red caviar could decline by 25-30 percent due to the unsuccessful salmon fishing season in the Far East.
