Belgian authorities returned tough quarantine due to COVID-19
School holidays have been extended, shops are closing. Restrictions will also affect the service industry and gatherings of people
Against the background of a worsening epidemiological situation, Belgium is returning to strict restrictive measures: school holidays are extended in the country, shops and service enterprises are closed, and no more than one person is allowed to visit. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo, reports The Brusseles Times.
“We are returning to lockdown, which has only one purpose – to ensure that our healthcare system does not collapse,” he explained.
The new measures, if their deadline is not specified separately, will enter into force on the evening of November 1 and will last until December 13. In early December, the authorities will assess their effectiveness.
For security reasons, the following rules are introduced:
Outdoors, it will still be possible to gather in groups of up to four. At the same time, everyone must wear masks and maintain a social distance.
A nationwide curfew remains. It operates from midnight to 5:00 am.
Earlier, the Belgian government has already limited the sale of alcohol after 20:00, canceled Christmas markets and demanded that employers, if possible, transfer employees to remote work.
The borders of Belgium will remain open. There are also no restrictions on the travel of people within the kingdom.
Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbrucke said that compliance with the measures taken should, among other things, prevent health workers from having to make difficult choices between patients who can be saved.
“If the numbers continue to grow at this rate, it’s simple: the time will come when our intensive care will be overwhelmed. At this point, healthcare workers will have to make choices they don’t want to make, ”he said.
In Belgium, over the past week, on average, 15 316 new cases were detected per day. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 392,258 people have been infected with the coronavirus in the kingdom. 11,308 patients died. The population of Belgium by January 1, 2020 was 11 492 641 people.
