Turkey complained about tourists locked up in hotels
The Turkish authorities explained the sharp drop in tourism industry revenues and complained about travelers locked in hotels. The portal “Turprom” reports about it with reference to the statement of the President of the tourist group of the city council of Antalya Recep Yavuz.
Antalya’s tourism revenue declined by more than 70 percent in the third quarter of 2020, compared to the same period last year, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute. Commenting on these figures, Yavuz first of all noted that 2019 was the most successful year for the tourism industry and it is illogical to compare it with 2020.
In addition, according to him, during the coronavirus pandemic, vacationers practically did not leave their hotels for fear of infection.
“The overwhelming majority of tourists who arrived were closed in their hotels. Almost none of them could and did not intend to spend additional money: few bought excursions, went to the city for shopping and participated in other activities that brought additional income. This caused additional damage to income from tourism, ”the speaker explained.
Nevertheless, he added, the main damage to the industry was caused by the drop in tourist flow – from 21 million travelers to 5 million.
Earlier it became known that a tax on hotel accommodation came into force in Turkey on November 1. The new tax will have to be paid directly to the hotel only by independent tourists; for travelers who book tours, it will be included in the price of the tour. Initially, a one percent tax was planned to be introduced in April.
