Putin ordered to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the government to ensure the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the country. The instruction was given within the framework of the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
According to the presidential decree, by 2030 the government must ensure that greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by up to 70% compared to 1990 levels. In addition, the government has been instructed to develop and approve the Strategy for the socio-economic development of Russia until 2050 with a low level of such emissions.
The Paris Climate Agreement, which entered into force in 2015, proposes a range of measures to combat global warming. Thus, the participating countries are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Russia joined the agreement in September 2019. In March 2020, the Ministry of Economy developed a strategy for the development of the Russian Federation with low greenhouse emissions. In particular, it assumes a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by a third by 2030 from the 1990 level.
