Lavrov discussed peace in Karabakh with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his counterpart from Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov discussed by telephone the practical implementation of the peace agreement concluded between Armenia and Azerbaijan with the mediation of Russia. The politicians especially touched upon the issue of organizing the work of the Russian peacekeepers. The conversation is reported on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry. It happened on the initiative of Azerbaijan.
The ministers also confirmed the need to involve international organizations in dealing with the consequences of the armed conflict in the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh. These include the Red Cross, UNESCO and the United Nations. They should contribute to “post-conflict reconstruction, the solution of humanitarian problems, the preservation of religious and cultural heritage in the region.”
The Russian military police began patrolling the territories on the contact line in Karabakh yesterday. The Russian Ministry of Defense said that the parties were observing the ceasefire. Earlier, with the mediation of Russian peacekeepers, Baku and Yerevan exchanged bodies of the dead.
The peacekeeping contingent under the terms of the agreement will be in the region for five years. This period may be extended if none of the parties withdraws from the agreement.
