Final results from AstraZeneca vaccine trials show 70% efficacy
On Tuesday, the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford published the final test results of their joint development of the vaccine against COVID-19. Clinical trials of the vaccine have demonstrated the effectiveness of the vaccine in 70.4% of cases. This is confirmed by previously published preliminary results – then it was about the effectiveness of 62% and 90% with different dosage options, and on average – 70%.
The current data was published in the renowned medical journal The Lancet, making AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford the first to do this. Previously, other pharmaceutical companies developing the vaccine, Moderna and Pfizer, provided their own final test results, but they have not yet published this data in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Sorio said the company will now work to obtain regulatory approval for the vaccine. In early December, the British regulator issued a permit to use the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, and today the country has already begun vaccinating with it.
