US imposed sanctions against Turkey in connection with the purchase of S-400 systems from Russia
The United States imposed sanctions on the Turkish Defense Industry Authority and four senior officials from the department’s leadership. According to the US State Department, the restrictive measures were imposed due to the purchase of the S-400 air defense system from Rosoboronexport. The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned Washington’s actions and promised retaliatory measures.
“Despite our warnings, Turkey continued purchasing and testing the S-400 system from Russia. Today’s sanctions against the Turkish Defense Industry Authority demonstrate that the United States is in full compliance with CAATSA. We will not tolerate major deals with the Russian defense sector, ”Mr. Pompeo wrote on Twitter.
The sanctions targeted the head of the Defense Industry Directorate Ismail Demir, his deputy Faruk Yigit, the head of the air defense and space division Serhat Gentsoglu and the head of the regional air defense systems directorate program Mustafa Alper Deniz. The sanctions include a freeze of their assets in the United States, as well as a ban on entry into the country.
The introduction of restrictive measures was commented on in Moscow. “This, of course, is another manifestation of an arrogant attitude towards international law, a manifestation of illegitimate, unilateral coercive measures that the United States has been using for many years – already decades – left and right,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters (quoted by TASS).
Deliveries of Russian S-400s to Turkey began in July 2019. The United States opposed this and demanded to abandon the deal in favor of the American Patriot complexes. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly stated that Ankara is not going to abandon Russian systems and will not ask Washington for permission to test the complexes.
