Ministry of Education and Science discusses reducing the cost of distance learning in universities
The head of the Ministry of Education and Science Valery Falkov said that the Ministry is working on the issue of reducing the cost of distance learning in universities. Poor quality of instruction may be the reason for cost reduction. According to the minister, about 3 million Russian students are now studying remotely, or 64%.
“In those situations when the quality is inadequate or when, for objective reasons, it cannot provide quality teaching or such a number of hours in disciplines, then this, of course, is the basis for raising the question of reducing the cost,” said Mr. Falkov in the program “Vesti” on the TV channel “Russia 1”. He noted that in most cases, because of the pandemic, universities incur high costs, as they help students and teachers with the purchase of computer equipment, provide accommodation for those who cannot go home.
On December 22, Deputy Minister of Education and Science Dmitry Afanasyev said that the department began to discuss with universities the government’s recommendations to reduce the cost of training for contract students. The Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Education should work out a single solution by February 15, 2021. University rectors fear that they will not be able to compensate for the financial losses and propose, instead of lowering fees, grant scholarships for the best or needy contract students.
