After Sandu’s inauguration, the language on the website of the President of Moldova changed
On the official website of the President of Moldova, after the inauguration of President Maia Sandu, the section mark in “Moldovan language” was changed to “Romanian”. Telegram-channel “Sputnik Near Abroad” drew attention to this.
In fact, we are talking about one and the same language, since Moldovan is considered the official dialect of Romanian. Minor differences between them are observed at the level of literary norms, phonetics and vocabulary. In the declaration of independence of the republic, the official language of the state is called Romanian, while the country’s constitution defines it as Moldovan.
Changes to the site are attributed to Sandu’s political stance. Former President of Moldova Igor Dodon, in turn, has repeatedly stated that Moldovan and Romanian are two different languages. The tabs in Russian and English have not changed.
In 2017, the Constitutional Court of Moldova approved a bill to replace the state language in the constitution with Romanian. The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova, headed by Dodon, opposed this decision and proposed to the parliament to put this issue to a referendum.
