Mother of ex-GRU Colonel Sergei Skripal dies of coronavirus
The mother of the former colonel of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) Sergei Skripal, who contracted the coronavirus, died at the age of 93. RBC was informed about this by his niece Victoria Skripal.
According to her, Elena Skripal, who had 25% of her lungs affected, died on the evening of January 7. “But her age, diabetes mellitus, arrhythmia – all this affected. The condition was consistently difficult all this time, she was on a ventilator, ”explained Viktoria Skripal.
Sergei Skripal was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2006 for revealing to the British intelligence service MI6 the names of Russian agents who were secretly operating in Europe. In 2010, he was amnestied and exchanged for SVR residents detained in the United States. Skripal was granted asylum in the UK, where he worked for the local special services.
In March 2018, the ex-colonel and his daughter Julia were found unconscious on a bench in Salisbury. Former British Prime Minister Theresa May then stated that the Skripals were poisoned with a Novichok-class nerve agent developed in Russia. All charges were denied in Moscow. Later, as a sign of protest, London expelled 23 Russian diplomats from the country, Moscow in response sent the same number of British diplomats home.
Britain blamed the Skripal poisoning on agents of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense Ruslan Boshirov and Alexander Petrov. In turn, Petrov and Boshirov denied the accusations and said that they were in Salisbury as tourists.
