The Speaker of the Estonian Parliament responded to the proposal to join the country to Russia
The speaker of the Estonian parliament, a member of the Conservative People’s Party, Henn Põlluaas, responded to the opposition’s proposal to annex the country to Russia. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Põlluaas said the idea poses a threat to Estonia’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Earlier, the opposition’s proposal was also condemned by Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas. “In my opinion, all Estonian political forces should unequivocally condemn such a proposal,” the politician said.
Deputies of the opposition Reform Party proposed to bring the issue of Estonia’s accession to Russia to a referendum. In this way, they tried to prevent a referendum, which could lead to the inclusion in the country’s Constitution of a provision prohibiting same-sex marriage and restricting the rights of LGBT people. “I made this proposal to draw attention to the absurdity of this referendum on marriage,” explained one of the initiators of the initiative, MP Urmas Kruuse. According to him, he later abandoned this idea.
In December, the Estonian parliament passed in the first reading a bill on the holding of a referendum, in which the citizens of the country will have to answer the question whether marriage is an alliance of a man and a woman. Members of the ruling coalition believe that this is necessary to protect traditional values. To delay the adoption of the bill in the second reading, opposition representatives have proposed more than nine thousand amendments.
