Kravchuk is going to Crimea
The first president of Ukraine and the current representative of the Ukrainian side in the Trilateral Contact Group for the settlement of the conflict in Donbass, Leonid Kravchuk, announced his desire to visit Crimea. RIA Novosti reports.
At the same time, he stressed that the visit is unlikely to bring him “great satisfaction.” “I don’t think that this trip could be positively assessed by the Russian side,” Kravchuk said.
He added that now he rarely travels far, but he would like to personally visit the peninsula and assess the situation with his own eyes.
Earlier in January, Kravchuk announced that Ukraine was ready for a compromise with Russia on Crimea.
At the beginning of 2014, the central government changed in Ukraine after massive anti-government protests in Kiev and other cities. In March of the same year, Crimea joined Russia after a referendum on the peninsula, during which the majority of local residents supported this decision. Soon thereafter, part of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions declared independence. Ukraine tried to return them by force, but to no avail. Kiev accuses Moscow of armed aggression and the occupation of Crimea and Donbass regions. Russia rejects all claims of Ukraine.
