President of the Moscow Zoo dies
President of the Moscow Zoo Vladimir Spitsin died at the age of 80. On Saturday, January 23, the official website of the zoo reports.
The reasons for the death of Vladimir Spitsin are not named. As noted in the official report, Spitsin devoted almost his entire life to working with animals – he got a job as a loader at the Leningrad Zoo at the age of 17, right after graduation. From a loader, Spitsin worked his way up to deputy director for economic affairs, and then he was transferred to Moscow.
In 1974, Vladimir Spitsin was appointed deputy director of the Moscow Zoo for scientific affairs, and three years later he himself became director and held this post from 1977 to 2013. Spitsin was also an honored cultural worker of the RSFSR, academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and President of the Euro-Asian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EARAZA).
In addition, Vladimir Spitsin served as chairman of the Council for the Coordination of the Activities of Russian Zoos. An official statement from the Moscow Zoo emphasizes that “Vladimir Vladimirovich [Spitsin] was a stubborn, enthusiastic, strong person, but most importantly, caring.”
