Mediazona editor-in-chief arrested for retweeting jokes
Sergei Smirnov, editor-in-chief of Mediazona, was arrested for 25 days for retweeting a joke. This was reported on the website of the publication.
According to Mediazona, the reason for initiating an administrative case was a retweet of a joke about Smirnov’s outward resemblance to the leader of the Tarakany group Dmitry Spirin.
The message, retweeted by the editor-in-chief of Mediazona, contained information about the time and place of the uncoordinated action in support of Alexei Navalny (founder of the Anti-Corruption Fund – FBK, included by the Ministry of Justice in the register of organizations performing the functions of a foreign agent), which took place on January 23.
Smirnov was found guilty of repeated violation of the rules for holding a rally. The maximum penalty for such a violation is 30 days of arrest.
On January 30, Smirnov was detained by police officers near his house. It was reported that he was charged with a violation of the rally legislation, the protocol was drawn up under article 20.2 of the Administrative Code (“Violation of the established procedure for organizing or holding a meeting, meeting, demonstration, procession or picketing”). On the same day he was released on an obligation to appear in court.
Actions in support of Navalny were held in Russia on February 2, as well as on January 31 and 23. The protests were held in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov, Chelyabinsk, Yekaterinburg, Yakutsk and other large cities.
