Tihanovskaya: Lukashenka’s regime will fall in spring
Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, considered the winner of the 2020 presidential election by the Belarusian opposition, expects President Alexander Lukashenko to step down in spring 2021. She hopes for increased pressure on him inside the country.
“Lukashenka’s regime will fall this year. I think he will leave in the spring, ”Ms Tikhanovskaya told the German newspaper Bild. “We believe that pressure on the regime inside the country will play a role. We also hope for a strong alliance between the new US government and the EU, ”the oppositionist added. In her opinion, the pressure will grow, and at some point it will become “too strong” for Mr. Lukashenko, and he will leave.
Ms. Tikhanovskaya is in favor of a peaceful protest. She thanked the EU but complained about the bureaucracy. “We want more harshness and more sanctions – and a little faster,” she said.
