Putin signed a law to block mobile communications in prisons
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on the possibility of blocking mobile phones in prisons and pre-trial detention centers. The document was published on March 9 on the official Internet portal of legal information.
The law empowers the bodies of the penal system to apply to telecom operators with a request to terminate the service of subscriber numbers illegally used by suspects, accused and prisoners.
Telecom operators will have to block the SIM-cards of the corresponding subscribers on the basis of a written decision of the head of the FSIN, his deputies or heads of the territorial bodies of the FSIN.
As the head of the State Duma Security Committee Vasily Piskarev (United Russia) said earlier, the amendments will help prevent “not only the commission of fraudulent actions using mobile communications, but also the supply of drugs and other prohibited items to convicts and suspects, organizing pressure on witnesses, coordinating actions of the criminals who remained at large.
The law was adopted by the State Duma on February 17 and approved by the Federation Council on March 3, 2021.
