COVID-19 looks like a disease affecting all organs
Doctors in Russia currently treat COVID-19 not as a respiratory infection that affects lung tissue, but rather as systemic vasculitis. This is due to the fact that the virus affects the vascular endothelium in all organs, but through the lungs this process is easiest to recognize. Natalia Kostina, the chief freelance pulmonologist of the Voronezh region, told RIA “Voronezh” about this.
“These lesions, which we see in lung tissue, are usually found everywhere – in the kidneys, liver, in the skin. Therefore, what we see in the lung tissue is not pneumonia. These are rather signs of epitheliitis – vascular lesions, lesions of the vascular wall, ”she said.
According to her, the course of coronavirus infection does not end after the patient is discharged. Some people can be sick for up to six to eight months. In this case, the acute phase lasts on average up to four weeks after discharge, at which point complications may appear. Then, from four to twelve weeks, there is a subacute phase. During these two stages, both regression and progress of symptoms can be observed.
Three months after the first signs of COVID-19 appear, a “pure” postcovid begins, which in all manifestations turned out to be similar to systemic vasculitis. It can be accompanied by very different symptoms, including neurological and from the gastrointestinal tract. At the same time, patients who have gone through intensive care during this period simultaneously experience postresuscitation syndrome.
Earlier, Western scientists have found a link between COVID-19 and damage to the blood vessels of the brain as a result of inflammation. Researchers analyzed the MRI scans of the brains of deceased patients with coronavirus and saw many small damage to the nerve tissue on them, which usually appear due to a stroke or inflammation of the brain. It turned out that the capillaries collapsed due to the high activity of the immune system, which hit not only the virus, but also the healthy blood vessels, in which “holes” were formed, where blood clots and microglia had penetrated.
