The Mayor’s Office of Vilnius recommended that residents of the city stock up on iodine tablets due to the launch of the BelNPP. RIA Novosti reports.
Everyone was advised to contact pharmacies by November 17th. The Mayor’s Office has disseminated its statement through the local media in connection with the launch of the Belarusian NPP.
“The tablets are being distributed among the population for preventive purposes in connection with the launch of the Ostrovets nuclear power plant (NPP) in Belarus,” the 15 Minutes newspaper reported. According to the newspaper, “it is necessary to protect the thyroid gland from the harmful effects of radioactive iodine.”
The central polyclinic of Vilnius was obliged to send electronic prescriptions for pills for 500 thousand city residents in advance. They intend to issue them in all pharmacies upon presentation of an identity card.
In an article from a Lithuanian newspaper, the authors noted that “potassium iodide tablets should only be used by Vilnians in the event of a nuclear accident in a neighboring country.” They should be accepted subject to recommendations from the competent government authorities.
Earlier, the incumbent President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that the first power unit of the Belarusian NPP, launched on November 7, will provide 20 percent of the republic’s need for electricity. Lukashenko noted that a bright future awaits the country with nuclear energy.
