The scandalous skyscraper of Gazprom became the skyscraper of the year
The Lakhta Center skyscraper in St. Petersburg, where Gazprom’s headquarters is located, won the prestigious Emporis Skyscraper Award for architecture and became the Skyscraper of the Year. Prior to that, in the entire 20-year history of the prize, not a single project from Russia was awarded it. This was reported on the website of the organizers.
The beginning of the construction of the skyscraper is associated with a scandal – it was planned to build it in Okhta, which was opposed by local residents. In their opinion, the skyscraper would have destroyed the historic district of St. Petersburg and spoiled the view. After the protests, it was decided to move the object to its current location.
Lakhta Center is not only the tallest building in Russia (462 meters), but also the tallest building in Europe and 14th tallest in the world. The jury especially noted the shape of the skyscraper. Due to its external structure (five wings, which are rotated by almost 90 degrees), it resembles a flame, which is also visible in the Gazprom logo.
Also reported on the environmental friendliness and energy efficiency of high-rise buildings. Since it is the northernmost skyscraper in the world, it is exposed to freezing temperatures. With the help of infrared emitters, heat is not lost, but returned back to the system.
In addition to business space, about a third of the complex is reserved for public spaces: an open amphitheater, a pedestrian embankment, an observation deck, a transforming concert hall, a children’s scientific and educational center with a planetarium, panoramic restaurants and galleries.
