Rospotrebnadzor assessed WHO warning of a new wave of coronavirus
At the beginning of 2021, an increase in the number of cases of coronavirus infection is quite possible, however, the forecast of the World Health Organization (WHO) about the third wave is unlikely to come true, says Vadim Pokrovsky, Deputy Director of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. His words are quoted by the radio station “Moscow speaking”.
“The rise in the incidence, of course, will be regular in autumn and spring. Partially it will be winter, of course, because people gather in large numbers in closer rooms, – said Pokrovsky. “But it is unlikely that there will be anything as unusual as when the virus came the first time.”
At the same time, the academician believes that it is wrong to use the term “wave” when describing the coronavirus pandemic.
“In epidemiology, there is no term“ wave ”or“ rise ”. We can just talk only about an increase in the number of cases of infection, and this is quite possible, but there are factors that prevent such a development of events. All of Europe already knows well the methods of preventing the spread (…), the number of people who have already been ill is growing, ”the epidemiologist emphasized.
Earlier, WHO Special Envoy David Nabarro said that if European countries do not build the necessary infrastructure now, then in early 2021 they are threatened with the third wave of COVID-19.
In Russia, as of November 22, more than 2 million 89 thousand people were infected with coronavirus infection.
