Bloomberg: Brexit Negotiators Close To Compromise On Fisheries
Negotiators between the EU and the UK have begun discussing the terms of cooperation between the country and the bloc after Brexit, Bloomberg reported, citing sources on both sides of the discussions. The publication notes that the parties are beginning to reach a political compromise on the distribution of fishing quotas.
The head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the resumption of negotiations on “Brexit” yesterday. They noted that disagreements persisted on three key issues – equity, governance and fisheries. Bloomberg notes that the first issue remains the most pressing: the EU wants to oblige the UK to comply with some rules on subsidies and comply with environmental and labor standards.
Ms von der Leyen and Mr Johnson will have a telephone conversation on the evening of December 7th. The members of the negotiating teams want by this time either to reach an agreement, or to admit that one can no longer be reached. The EU diplomat, according to Bloomberg, noted that the likelihood of an agreement within 24 hours is low.
The UK left the EU on January 31st. Until the end of 2020, a transitional period lasts, when the parties agree on future cooperation. EU rules still apply to the UK.
What will change after the country’s exit from the European Union – in the material of “Kommersant” “Britain is leaving the lead.”
