Cypriot Orthodox Christians take to the streets because of the “satanic” song for Eurovision
Orthodox residents of Cyprus took to the streets to protest against the choice of Elena Tsagrin’s “satanic” song El Diablo to represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to local media.
The Orthodox Youth of Cyprus organized a protest near the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK), which was responsible for the selection of the composition for the event. The protesters said the song was a “hymn to the dark forces” and opposed it to represent the country in the competition.
The demonstrators called for a composition to be found that would reflect the problem of the survival of the Greek Orthodox community in Cyprus. One of the protesters also stressed that Cyprus is not an island of Satanists.
Earlier, the Synod of the Cypriot Orthodox Church called on the government not to allow Elena Tsagrina’s song to participate in the international competition. The Cypriot authorities, in turn, refused to intervene in the conflict around the composition, although they said they respect the point of view of opponents of El Diablo.
